Commercial Space Color Palettes That Clients Actually Approve in 2026

I presented a terracotta-and-sage scheme to a corporate client last month. They loved it in the mood board. Then they asked me to “tone it down” for the boardroom. We ended up with greige walls and navy accents. Again.

Here is what is actually getting approved in commercial interiors this year—not what design blogs predict, but what clients sign off on.

The Safe Bets (70% of Projects)

Warm neutrals still dominate. But the specific warm neutrals shifted. Beige is out. Warm gray with a pink undertone is in. Think Benjamin Moore HC-172 or Farrow and Ball Purbeck Stone.

Navy as an accent color peaked in 2023. It is being replaced by deep olive and charcoal brown in furniture upholstery and millwork. I specified olive velvet on lounge seating for a co-working space in March—client approved it first round.

Where Bold Color Works

Two zones where clients accept saturated color without pushback:

Breakout areas and informal meeting spaces. A burnt orange sofa or emerald green accent wall gets approved here because the space is coded as “creative” already.

Washrooms and corridors. These are low-risk zones. I have gotten deep teal, terracotta, and even a dark plum approved for restroom vanity walls. The logic: it is a small space, easy to repaint, and it photographs well for the client social media.

Furniture Color vs. Architecture Color

This distinction matters for procurement. Architectural color (walls, floors, ceilings) stays neutral 80% of the time. Furniture color is where you introduce personality.

For sourcing colored upholstery and finished wood in non-standard tones, work with manufacturers who hold fabric and finish libraries rather than ordering custom. Contract furniture suppliers with in-house finishing lines can match Pantone references without the 300-unit MOQ that custom color usually requires.

What to Avoid

Millennial pink is dead in commercial. So is the all-white Scandinavian look—clients now associate it with “cold” and “dated.” Black metal frames are oversaturated. Brushed brass still works but specify PVD coating or it tarnishes in 18 months.
